The Art Diaries: The Miner

In keeping with my new years resolution of doing more art work I wanted to chuck myself into an area outside my comfort zone and play with some oil paints. Long story short, I HATE oil paints. When I work I tend to just work on it for hours on end till it’s finished, I don’t like leaving something and them coming back to it later because by that point I can already see the faults and want to burn it.

Typically my favorite mediums are watercolour, acrylic, inks, pencil and charcoal. Oils, along with pastels, are just not my cup of tea. Not to mention the fact I’ve only really worked with them about 3-4 times. Need to practice more.

But I had to wait for my computer to get returned today, (it’s finally fixed!) and had already used up all the space on my SD cards filming an Ice Queen Crown for tomorrow, so I decided to do some painting while I waited.

First thing I did it take a picture of myself to get the pose right, (the oh-so-sexy overall included) and get the light behind me right so I would have an idea how it would fall on the overall.

I’m already having “ugh I hate it moments” but I’m going to do my best to finish this one, even if I mess it up which I probably will.

For the moment I’ve just done the background and her overalls, I’m a little bit terrified about working on her skin. With pencils or acrylic it wouldn’t be a problem, but for me typically with oils this is where the whole thing falls appart.

I have no idea why it’s showing up as red, the actual painting is using yellows and browns but yea….thanks for that camera. Lets see if this one turns out ok or ends up being painted over and re-used. Either way, at least I’ll have practiced some more and gotten more use out of my poor abandoned oil paints.

Random Phtos: Autum

I’m going to start off this blog post with an excuse and and explanation, as some of you might know I am in my final year at University so I’m pretty bogged down.

I had hoped to be able to keep doing reviews on my blog but it’s just not going to be possible so from time to time I’m going to try and do quick blog post like this one so you guys know I haven’t totally forgotten about my blog and died :)

I might start doing one or two blog posts showing you the projects I’m doing at Uni, I’m not sure…would you guys be interested in that?

Anyway, the photos are just three of a bunch I took white I was at my cousins wedding a few weeks ago. I took more than these 3 but these were my personal favorites, especially the one above.

I’m hoping I can improve my photography over they next few months, so these are just my stabs at some landscape photography.

Random Photos: Egg Art

So some of you might have noticed that I’ve been completely inactive the last week, the reason for that is that I had to go to a wedding and so I had limited access to the Internet.

It was a bit weird at first, I’m so used to being on the internet that it felt strange to be cut off it, but it was also quite nice as I got to relax a bit.

White I was there I took a few pictures (no not of the wedding: ), just a few random stabs at food art and some landscape photography. Where we were staying was so nice! I don’t have any pictures of the house but it was an old barn that had been really simply restored, just the basics and it was lovely!

Its quite relaxing to be away from mobile, computers and just noise in general some times :)

Anyway, there were a few eggs in the kitchen when we left and seeing as I had time to kill I ended up doodling on them. If you google food art some people have done some really amazing/funny ones.

Something that’s quite fun is too do this to the eggs in the kitchen and then wait to see people’s reactions, haha it can be quite funny!

I did take some really pretty pictures of the surrounding landscape where we were staying but I’ll show you that in a few days :)

Random Doodles: The Evolution of Perfection

So today I was getting through some homework when this idea popped into my head…normally I just sketch things down but this one I had to ink up. The first thing I did was sketch it out with a mechanical lead pencil. I don’t use normal pencils as they gent blunt constantly and it drives me nuts.

After that I inked it up took a photo and voila! :D

I want to see if I can get this one printed out on a t-shirt at some point. It would be quite nice to have a t-shirt with my own designs on :)

The Making of a Title Background no.1

Seeing as I will probably be doing quite a few of these step-by-step blog posts about how I make my title backgrounds I figured this title would be more appropriate than “Random Doodles”.

I was an absolute plonker and took the first pictures in really bad lighting so it only looked like scribbles on a page, for the next blog post I do I want to show you how I get the base lines for any portrait.

The difference between a good portrait and a bad one is nearly always down to whether you draw a good base sketch or a bad one.

Whenever I do a drawing the first thing I do is make a rough sketch. I never let myself use a rubber for the first stages of a drawing, a rubber makes you scared to just go for it and teaches you to be lazy in drawing.

The best way to get better at drawing is to learn to not rely on a rubber.

At this point I start to focus on chiseling out the features. Making the eyes the proper shape, the iris large, the ears and most importantly the shape of the face.

I always tend to work on the lips last, I don’t know why but until I’ve done the rest of the face I always find it quite hard to draw the lips accurately.

Once I’m absolutely sure that the proportions are correct I rub out only the pencil masks which get in the way, for example the rough sketch of the eye shape, lips and nose.

This is my favorite part! The shading :D

Normally I use a 2B or a 5B and lightly fill in the areas that need shading, I then blend this all out either with my fingers or a paper blending pencil.

For smaller shading I like to use a clay shaper.

These little tools are ideal for blending around the eyes, nose, mouth and ears.

At this point its just finishing off all the little details like the crown and the hair.

Now that I’ve drawn it I’m also going to put it through photoshop to get the exact look I want but for the moment this is what I’ve got :)

Random Doodles Pt.3

While I’m on a role of showing step by step how I create my title backgrounds I thought I’d show you this one I designed.

I started out with just a simple black page (in Photoshop) and then with the paint tool began layering colours over each other and drawing each little star.

This is what it looked like about an hour in.

The whole piece took 5 hours in total, each single little star had to be drawn so by the end of it I was pretty sick of stars.

So this is what the final piece looked like…

I was a little bit annoyed that this one took me so long and you only see it in the E.T. makeup tutorial for 3 seconds so I’m planning on using this one again for a Galaxy (the cluster of stars not the chocolate) inspired look.

Hopefully you’ll see this one again :)

Random Doodles Pt.2

For this one I wanted to show you roughly how I go through making my title backgrounds.

In my last post I showed you this design which I had been working on for the title background of an Arabic makeup series I want to do.

Once I’ve drawn roughly what I want I take a picture and work on it in Photoshop, I tend to make several versions of a piece till I settle on my favorite.

The first few tries are always rubbish, but after trying a few times I finally get it to look how I want it to.

Normally when I finish working on a piece I leave it alone for a few hours and then look at it again.

When you’ve been working on something for a few hours you tend to miss all the flaws and it’s only by taking a step back or getting a second opinion that you’ll see what needs improvement.

My main beef with this one is that all the patterns I had drawn had just gotten “lost”, also I wasn’t overly fond of the colour.

I wanted the colour to look like the light from a sunset in the desert on a palace wall, and this just didn’t quite cut it.

I had a similar issues with this version.

The colours were just too much and not subtle at all, also the patterns were completely lost and not as noticeable as I wanted them to be.

I finally settled on this one,  I might tweak it a bit more before I use it in a video but overall it’s got the feel I’m looking for :)

Random Doodles Pt.1

I really need to do more posts on my art work so I though I’d do a series were I just show you random drawings and doodles that I’ve done. Talk about what I used and and a few tips and tricks occasionally :)

The majority of these are all drawn in one of the two sketchbooks I have.

One is more for lyric ideas and chords, and the other for art and art ideas, but they tend to swap roles a lot.

This one I drew for the title background of my Simple Terminator Look, I normally do a rough sketch for my title backgrounds and then work on them more in photoshop.

Seeing as it was only the third piece I’d ever done in PhotoShop I did a pretty bad job, I make a point of not watching that tutorial because the title background bugs me so much.

This one I drew for the title background of an Arabic Makeup series I’ve been planning on doing for ages. It’s ended up looking like a mix of Indian and Arabic art, not quite what I had planned…but then again I don’t tend to plan a lot. Going with the flow is so much more fun.

I still need to work on this one in PhotoShop, with any luck it’ll end up better than my horrible Terminator title background.
